Security – by the neighborhood – for the neighborhood.

March 14, 2022 by Dee Baebler

The Board of the St Louis Hills Neighborhood Association (SLHNA) has voted to support the next phase of the AwareNet crime deterrence project.

Details about the project for St. Louis Hills are available at www.stlhills.com/safety/AwareNetProjectStatusAndHistory.pdf

Details about AwareNet are available at www.awarenet.us.

The next step of the project is to install an AwareNet compatible camera on at least 50 blocks in St. Louis Hills (SLH has approximately 200 blocks).

When 50 blocks have a camera, the SLHNA will fund the cost of a 4 week test of AwareNet with a private security guard patroling our neighborhood every night from 10pm-6am.

The goal of the 4 week test (pilot) is to prove:

  1. The security guard can immediately and consistently respond to AwareNet alerts.
  2. The security guard can successfully and consistently disrupt thieves from continuing their activity.
  3. The frequency and severity of criminal activity justifies the cost.

The results will be made available to the SLHNA Board and SLH residents to determine next steps (hopefully continuing the project with voluntary donations of $10 per month to pay for the private security guard long-term).

This plan depends on SLH residents supporting the project by buying and installing a camera for their block. It can be a single household or a group of households sharing the cost. But each camera requires a WiFi connection to a household.

Details are available at www.awarenet.us/getting-started.

If we can’t reach the goal of having a camera on 50 blocks, that will be a strong indication the neighborhood does not support the project and the 4 week test will not proceed. Of course, if that happens, people who have bought a camera own it and can continue using it as they like.

Take action now to support this project!  Please, don’t wait and expect others to participate. One camera on a block is good. Two or three is great.

For most households, the best camera will be the new Reolink Duo WiFi available direct from Reolink and on Amazon. It requires an electric outlet for power. For orders direct from Reolink, use discount code b2creo101offn to save 10% on any camera not on sale.
